Merit Badge Procedures & Counselors

Merit Badge Procedures

Merit Badge completion will generally require some work to be done outside of Troop time. A Scout should complete the following steps after selecting a Merit Badge of interest:

·         Obtain SM approval to begin working on a specific Merit badge.

·         Receive blue card listing Merit Badge name and signed by SM.

·         Learn identity of Merit Badge Counselor from SM or Advancement Chairman will assist in obtaining a Merit Badge Counselor. Parents are encouraged to assist the Troop as a specific Merit Badge Counselor. When serving as a Merit Badge Counselor, the parent must work with more Scouts than his/her own son.

·         Upon completion of the Merit Badge, the Merit Badge Counselor signs the blue card and it is given to the SM for his/her signature of completion.

·         The Advancement Chairman is then told of its completion for awarding of the Badge.

Partial Merit Badge cards are to be kept by the Advancement Chairman. Exceptions would occur if the Merit Badge Counselor was an adult within the Troop. Scouts will be notified on a quarterly basis of the partial merit badges that they have.

Merit Badge Counselors
The merit badge counselor is a key player in the Boy Scout advancement program. Whatever your area of expertise or interest—whether it is a special craft or hobby (basketry, leatherwork, coin collecting), a profession (veterinary medicine, aviation, engineering), or perhaps a life skill (cooking, personal management, communications)—as a merit badge counselor, you can play a vital role in stirring a young man's curiosity about that particular topic. By serving as a merit badge counselor, you offer your time, knowledge, and other resources so that Scouts can explore a topic of interest.

If you are interested in becoming a merit badge counselor contact Scoutmaster Ruston Hughes.  It is easy to become a volunteer. You will need to register with Boy Scouts of America.
